Swimming Pool Chlorine Care Guide

Chlorine is by far the most widely used sanitizer in swimming pools. There are options to replace it, but none are as easy to use and as readily available.

Pros: You can find chlorine everywhere and it works really well as a swimming pool sanitizer.

Cons: Must be added constantly to maintain a chlorine level. Some swimmers feel it dries out their skin and hair.

Alternatives: Use a Mineral Purifier to reduce daily chlorine use to a minimum.

Maintenance Schedule

Start Up:

  • Chlorine: Establish a chlorine level of 1 - 3 ppm to sanitize the water.
  • Algaecide: Treat with an initial dose to prevent algae.
  • Stain & Scale Control: Treat with an initial dose to prevent metal stains & scale buildup if you have well water.
  • Test Water: Test chlorine, pH, cyanuric acid (stabilizer), total alkalinity, and calcium hardness.
  • pH & Alkalinity: Decrease both with pH decreaser. Increase with separate pH and alkalinity increasers.
  • Calcium Hardness: Increase if needed. You can't decrease high calcium hardness.
  • Stabilizer: Increase if needed. You can't decrease stabilizer.

Daily (or as needed):

  • Chlorine: Maintain a chlorine level of 1 - 3 ppm. Tablets or sticks work best.

Weekly:

  • Shock: Use any multi shock as a weekly preventative treatment. Repeat any time the water appears cloudy.
  • Algaecide: Treat with a maintenance dose weekly to prevent algae.
  • Test Water: Test chlorine, pH and total alkalinity. Ignore other levels. You only test those monthly.
  • pH & Alkalinity: Decrease both with pH decreaser. Increase with separate pH and alkalinity increasers.
  • Surface Cleaner: Weekly or as needed to keep the water line clean.

Monthly:

  • Filter Cleaner: Clean your filter every month and it will last longer and work better.
  • Test Water: Test cyanuric acid (stabilizer) and calcium hardness monthly.
  • pH & Alkalinity: Decrease both with pH decreaser. Increase with separate pH and alkalinity increasers.
  • Calcium Hardness: Increase if needed. You can't decrease high calcium hardness.
  • Stain & Scale Control: Treat with monthly dose to prevent metal stains & scale buildup if you have well water.
  • Stabilizer: Increase if needed. You can't decrease stabilizer.

Winterizing:

  • Winter Kits: Balance your water one last time and use a winter kit one day prior to closing.
