John Austin Pools, Inc. was founded in 1974 by John Austin, a lifelong resident of Howell, Michigan. While working for a contractor while attending college, John learned to install in-ground swimming pools. When that contractor decided to move out of state leaving John with all of the headaches of running a small business and none of the rewards, he decided to start his own pool company and call it John Austin Pools. In the late 1970's, with a growing reputation in the community and more and more pools in the ground, John and his wife Susan opened their first swimming pool supply store in downtown Howell. As the early eighties went by they moved into bigger and bigger storefronts to hold all of the pool chemicals their growing customer base wanted. Finally, in 1986 they moved their whole operation one town over to Brighton, Michigan where John Austin Pools, Inc. still resides today. |

For the next 12 years John and Susan grew their business in to the most respected in the area, raised two children Kelly and Matthew, and had a lot of fun doing it. They became a BioGuard Dealer and trained their staff to be experts in pool and spa care, after all they had thousands of pools and hot tubs installed now, and they all need good chemical care. In 1998 Matthew graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in business. After working for several large corporations while attending college Matthew knew he didn't have the desire to work in a large bureaucracy and came to work for John Austin Pools, eventually purchasing it. At that point the business was split up into seperate service, installation, and retail operations with Matthew operating the pool and spa retail supply business. After 6 years of working solely on building a retail pool and spa supply business Matthew was ready for something more. A lifelong "computer geek", Matthew had the idea, start selling pool and spa supplies on the internet. After building a site from scratch on nights and weekends over the course of 3 months, PoolGeek.com was born. |
| |
| Pool Geek has grown at an impressive rate. Spa-Geek.com was the original site name and it was developed to test the waters in internet commerce. Quickly, Matthew realized he needed to offer a complete line of Pool and Spa Supplies and built PoolGeek.com. Shipping as many as 100 orders a day in their first full year was proof that Pool Geek was doing something right. The formula was quite simple. |
